What Does the Bible Say About the Coronavirus?

In all my life, I haven’t seen anything like what we’re currently watching unfold around the world. The spread of Covid-19 (the Coronavirus) is evolving moment by moment, and every nation is responding in the way they deem necessary.
In Australia, gatherings of more than 100 people are now banned, and so many churches (including Bayside Church) are ceasing their weekly meetings and opting for online options and small groups. This is likely to be the case for at least six months, maybe longer!
Of course, this is not the first time the world has faced a pandemic. 36 million people died from HIV/AIDS, which was first identified in 1976. In 1918, 500 million people were infected with the Spanish flu, with up to 50 million causalities. Before that, you have to go way back to 1346 when 200 million people died from the Bubonic Plague.
But this is the first time in our lifetime that we have seen a global pandemic with such far-reaching consequences. So, what does the Bible say about the Coronavirus? There are several things …
This Is Not Revelation 13
Coronavirus is not the end of the world, it’s got nothing to do with an antichrist or the Mark of the Beast. I know some Christians will be very disappointed by this. I’ve met people who relish disasters because they somehow (in their mind) fulfil end time Bible prophecy. And this is not a new phenomenon. While the Black Plague ravaged Europe in the 1300s, people became convinced that their Jewish neighbours were secretly poisoning Christians’ wells. Conspiracy theories about Covid-19 range from believing the disease is a bioweapon to the result of eating bat soup. No, the Coronavirus has nothing to do with Revelation 13.
It Probably Has More to Do with Leviticus 13
According to the Encyclopedia Judaica, medicine and religion were closely connected for Jews in ancient times. Priests were “the custodians of public health,” and Jews in biblical times regarded the physician as “the instrument through whom God could affect the cure.” This is the picture we see in Leviticus 13, which, although it may sound somewhat elementary to our ears, was very progressive for its time (around 1500 years before Jesus).
According to Leviticus 13:21, the priest was to inspect someone who had a disease and could “isolate the affected person for seven days.” He would then re-examine them and could “isolate them for another seven days.” Fourteen days! Sound familiar? The diseased person “must live alone; they must live outside the camp.” And if they did walk around, they had to “wear torn clothes, let their hair be unkempt, cover the lower part of their face and cry out, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’” By the way, my favourite verse from Leviticus 13 is verse 40, “A man who has lost his hair and is bald is clean.” Amen!
So, Coronavirus isn’t about Revelation 13. It has more to do with Leviticus 13. So:
Act According to 1 Corinthians 13
Consider, a few weeks ago, Aussies (and others) were demonstrating a whole lot of love. We were buying goods to be sent to areas ravaged by bushfires, we were donating money and putting others first. But not anymore. Now we’re emptying supermarket shelves, stockpiling rice and pasta, and fighting over toilet rolls. In a few weeks, we’ve seen the very best and the very worst of humanity. What we need is more of 1 Corinthians 13:4-7.
Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails
Now, there’s some truth to live by.
Coronavirus isn’t about Revelation 13, it’s more like Leviticus 13. So, let’s act according to 1 Corinthians 13 until Romans 13 runs its course.
“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted.”
Now, I know these verses have been and can be abused. I’ve written about this elsewhere in a blog Are All Governments Established by God?, but now would be a great time to listen to our leaders and put into practice their directions, for the common good. I encourage you to pray for all who are in authority and everyone who is unwell. Pray for our health and medical practitioners as well as emergency services. Look out for the most vulnerable, and stay connected as much as you can. Love courageously and be like Jesus to those around you.

What are your thoughts on the coronavirus emerging during lent, right before Passover and Easter? My thoughts is that Satan is attacking the church during this holy season.
I think that,,the world should repent for thier sins,,im not saying that i dint sin,,i am also a sinner..im just saying..unless the world doesn’t call unto God,,there will be no cure for this corno virus…but through the midst of all these,,as Christians we should start praying for this pandemic situation….Only God is the solution for everything….plzzzz prau for the world…
Just to encourage you, those who are in Christ are new creation, we are no longer called sinners, the word of God says we become the righteousness of God, we are justified and sanctified. If you call yourself a sinner then what did Jesus save you from? He has taken us from the kingdom of darkness and translate us into His Kingdom of light

I found this message comforting. Truth is as I see it, with the apparent looming global financial crisis as a result of this epidemic, it could herald the cashless society and thus in time, Revelation 13. Tell me I’m wrong – I hope so. Yet we are told to not fear.

Would it be at all possible for god to correct any misinformation or misunderstanding in relation to this issue and correct or assist your interpretation of the bible and the virus. Seems than an all powerful god could do this quite easily but apparently chooses not too.

Good to get your take on this virus. I happen to think that this is definitely part of God’s plan. He did say there would be pestilence in the final days. You can interject and say…but we’ve had pestilence how is this any different. It is so because it is evidence that He is in control. He is making a few corrections to a world that has lost its way. To discourage people from thinking that this is not God, is to deny God the opportunity He is creating to be heard to many who do not believe. Who else could bring the world to its knees with fulminating velocity if not God? This isn’t just a virus, it is the germination of what is to come…think financial markets. It is said that global money market will crash igniting widespread chaos… Luke 21:26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. Does this sound familiar? You can’t just take a passage from Leviticus and use it to explain what is happening now! The virus is the start…2020 is seeing God’s great plan speed up with great haste in readiness for the return of His son. The other reason why this particular pestilence is so important in the scheme of His plan is that it is happening post the reinstatement of Israel, the holy land to the Jews…extremely significant in the world of prophecy…as it is one of God’s great promises, the Abramic promise that has been fulfilled. This virus is an opportunity to SEE God and how He works, to attest to His existence and for those who doubt that He does exist, to have a rethink for it is indeed unprecedented. Rob, look to the Russians for they are the King of the North…as they make their way closer to Israel…Armageddon is taking shape.

At this time we all need to repent and cry to God for forgiveness because he is gonna make this land barren and if we cry for him again, he will listen, he will be in the churches , Temples and he will forgive us all

I don’t believe he is implying that these are not the last days, just that it has nothing to do with being a specific sign of the last days because these types of things have been happening for a very long time.
We’re clearly in end times as it is stated in Matthew 24 as well as other scriptures.
For clarity, the Bible doesn’t refer to the end times. It speaks of later times and last days. Later times are times beyond when the letters were written (1 Tim 4:1). The Last Days began on the Day of Pentecost after the resurrection (Acts 2:17). So, we are in the Last days now and have been for 2000+ years.

Its time we go back on our knees and plead for revelation. One thing is clear and that is that God is in control. I am not afraid but I plead that God will open HIS hands to accommodate the repentant sinner. Let christians stand in the gap and plead for mercy.

You don’t know that it has nothing to do with the mark of the beast. There will be catastrophic world events and we will certainly live in a cashless society, there will be restrictions on all men who do not have a marking on their right hands or foreheads as it is clearly stated. The Coronavirus certainly could be the reason to wipe out all of the cash and progress us into the system, and it certainly could have nothing to do with Revelation. My point is that the world is on a steep moral decline, men are recognised as women, homosexual couples are all over TV, selfishness is rampant and mainstream churches are more deceptive than ever, coasting their members to hell. World leaders whether in the public eye or behind closed doors are severely corrupt and are under the direct influence of Satan. The antichrist will rise and he will establish his rule in a blatant fashion. An event such as a global pandemic is the perfect opportunity to implement change and execute strategies of evil.

Denmark has already made it LAW that if you refuse to be tested (shining the “thermometer in the forehead) or take the vaccine (having it delivered through the right arm) you will be denied access to basically every public place, buying groceries etc. People have no idea what is about to unfold or are able to detect biblical prophecy when it is being blatantly parlayed in front of them. This whole disaster was a cover up for what they (the satanists) really want to enact. They cannot do it by force (as stated in the bible), it has to be by individual choice. However because people have bought into the fear they are willing to do anything to “be safe” again. They’re literally crying for lockdowns, vaccines & tests. They’ve bought right into it. I didn’t think I’d have to go through this type of fight in my lifetime (ie being on the side of those who will NOT take a test or vaccine) & face a life of extreme ostracism. But. Here we are.

I support your comments when you said the antichrist will rise and he will establish his rule in a blantant fashion. Lockdown due to Corona is putting impact on CHRITIAN WORSHIP. The question is does our God happy worshiping him on line not in his House due to the virus that was implanted by the devil? Christians must focus on two prophetic books (Daniel and Revelation) that mark the end time. For sure we might stand at Revelation 9, :15 (the six Angel). This pestilence (corona) are not the one spoken by our Lord Jesus (Mathew 24:6) that when it happen we must not be troubled it is just a beginning of birth pain but the end is still to come? We must also monitor the movements in Israel where the eyes of God is, all these will give us more clue that we are closer to the end times and the rapture of the Christians. If we carefully observe all what was spoken in Mathew 24 it has already happened / happening at the same time and heading to the antichrist who will set own time and way of worshiping, the tribulation.

I don’t think you can say it has “nothing to do with the Anti Christ” as revealed in revelation. All of these crises are a link in the chain towards that day. Of course it’s foolish for anyone to say that it is with any certainty, but it seems quite reasonable to me that the Anti Christ would use a time when the whole world is in Crisis and everything including the Churches are in lock down to raise his Head and offer False Hope. In any event it certainly brings into focus our need to keep Short Accounts with God and where opportunity presents be ready to give an answer for the hope that is in us. God Bless your Assembly
Currently there is still much rain needed for a great part of our country in order to fully recover from the drought. A massive locust plague is happening across the food belt of Africa and much of Asia that the experts predict will destroy of the order of 80% of the combined food production. Coupled with these serious matters we now have the Coronavirus on top! So I believe we now need a “one cure fits all”. How? Let’s refer to 2 Chronicles Chapter 7 vs 13 and 14.
We have all FORGOTTEN GOD.
We have become comfortable in all our dealings in this world….right or wrong.
As humans we feel we have fallen from the sky or science has created us.Look at all the movies….where did most of them get their ideas from?(you guess).

Jesus said that at the end of time, “there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be” (Matthew 24:21).
Just prior to that, He warned that different kinds of disasters were “the beginning of sorrows” (v. 8). In the original Greek, the word “sorrows” is equivalent to labor pains. During childbirth, the contractions, the “sorrows,” gradually occur closer and closer together. Are we seeing this in our world today? It is not only the novel coronavirus; it is the locust plagues in Africa, the tornadoes in Tennessee, the missile launches from North Korea and in Iraq. In a single chapter, Jesus appears to have predicted the exact state of our world today.
In that same chapter, He also described the state of society: “Then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another” (v. 10). Is this happening now, when fear has turned to procuring weaponry over a lack of toilet paper? Are we beginning to see “the love of many … grow cold”? (v. 12).
Jesus also clearly stated the reason for all of these predictions: so that we could be ready for His soon return (v. 44). Now that the signs of Matthew 24 are appearing, we can know it is time to prepare for what is coming next.

The Bible never teaches to “prepare” for the last days. The only way to be prepared is to be born again. The only instructions for believers is to “watch and pray.” Paul chastised the church of Thessalonians for “preparing” for Christ’s return by selling their possessions and sitting on their rooftops waiting for His return instead of living their normal lives by faith. So, not only is preparing not biblical, it is actually contrary to the teachings of the Bible.

I agree that prayer is very important, however Bible prophecy it is given to us for our benefit. Particularly, it serves to help us prepare for the future. Bible prophecy prevents deception, and this is essential for Christians in the end times as there will be many concerning the nature of Christ’s second coming.
Furthermore, Bible prophecy warns the lost and strengthens faith. Ultimately, the focus of Bible prophecy is to reveal Jesus and his message of love and redemption.

I agree with you on this matter. Brother..the Lord Jesus told his disciples that nobody knows the exact day and hour of his return and when all of these end time events will take place but He also spoke of signs. It would be foolish to just dismiss this pandemic as something not connected with those signs. The point is for his people to always be prepared.

If you belong to Christ Jesus and have his mark on your forehead,, no fatal sickness or any harm will come upon you. True Christians and believers in Christ Jesus, do not be worried or afraid because Christ is with us, the rains have started to fall, the floods are coming but were in the Ark (Jesus). We will rise above very soon and be with our Saviour and Redeemer for Eternity. There, there will be no Sickness, Pain, Suffering, Tears or Death, we will rein with out Lord God through Jesus Christ our Saviour and Redeemer forever. Amen!!!!

While I agree with what you have said, I would be careful in saying this is not about the end times. “No man knows” what hour the Lord may appear. As you referenced, there are many prophecy-centric “believers” who will constantly tell us their opinions about what is going to happen and for the most part these folks are not that helpful to the church at large. So we do want to make the mistake of saying “Coronavirus is xyz in Revelation”. But neither do we want to make the mistake of saying this could never be connected to the end times… Matt 24:44…Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. Also, Revelation is very cryptic, so how does anyone know exactly how to interpret it? God is in control. It is amazing how in just a few weeks, all of the great attractions of the world (the Colosseum, the Eiffel Tower, the Opera House) now sit empty, the financial markets lay in ruin and we are not sure we are going to find bread to eat. God can focus the attention of the world when he want to.
Hi Greg. The “no man knows” verse refers to Jesus coming as a thief in the night. In 1 Thessalonians 5, the apostle Paul comforts followers of Jesus with these words, “But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.” In other words, Jesus is NOT coming “as a thief” for his people.
No one knows that day or hour, but we must all be ready.

I have been praying for revelation about the present situations in the world for I was seeing that Christianity was silent and the situation was going out of control of any man!
God is very faithful that as I was praying at night,the Holy Spirit revealed to me a lot about the resurgence of the pandemic called corona virus!!. Unless I don’t know God whom I have served for good time now,but if He is the same God who reveals mysteries ( Isaiah 42:9), I have enough spiritual and biblical evidence that corona virus was crafted in the world of darkness by the Antichrist. The Antichrist, with the world systems, principles of the world,are responsible for this!! This isn’t a joke my brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus. The aim is to destroy Christianity, conspiracy is that with the help of government systems the Antichrist destroy Christianity,press down the already strained church to the extent that we should become completely vulnerable. In so doing this after a long run,the poor church may loose ground and bow down to the beast and worship it–(Revelation 13:15-17) .
Any revelation must have biblical truth,so for my side I was given that scripture.
Let us stay vigilant because the end is near,we should repent that the Lord may come to find us worthy.

While it is possible the coronavirus might be a first step to the end times, it might just pass as other pandemics did. The economic fallout might take longer to recover than the disease. However one thing that has changed is that for the first time in world history we have seen:
a) Governments around the world use dictatorial power.
b) Churches around the world closed.
We now know that an end times persecution is possible as we have witnessed the two key steps in action.
What you said may be in sync with “That” scripture but that doesn’t mean that the times are not representive of Revelations. Bill Gates right now wants to implant us all (under our skin) with some chip that tells everything about immunizations, whether you’ve contracted the disease etc., eliminating the time for a vaccine to be created. How do we not know that this isn’t the mark of the beast just as Revelations speaks of?

No covid is not the mark of the Beast. That happened back in the time of the writing of the book of Revelation. It was a Coin depicting the emperor as god, divine. The Emperor was known as the Beast. The people back then referred to that coin as the mark of the beast. Same 100 year period. Many attribute it to Jesus chasing the money changers out from the temple as people were exchanging mark of the beast coins for currency not depicting the emperor as a god. The first paragraphs of Revelation tell you how to interpret it. !) The Revelation of who Jesus is. 2) It is written to the 7 churches of Asia, just as Romans is written to the Roman (so not us) 3) It is written in signings or symbolism. It is not literal 4) Most importantly of things which soon must take place. * These Churches were in great persecution. If you received Jesus as lord, you were either put to death, imprisoned or at the least not allowed to work.. God did not address them about things which would have nothing to do with them. Context is everything. Most of the book had taken place already in the book of Mathew. Over 250 old testament scripture are added. Those were futuristic from several centuries ago pre book of Revelation.. This book should have been called The 7 churches of Asia and then not so constantly misunderstood
The issue is, In Leviticus the preist knew the person had a disease then quarantined them for 7 days. They are telling All people who have no disease to quarantine, stay home, stay six feet apart, and wear a mask? The whole world can’t be sick with disease all at the same time. I don’t think that has ever happened in the bible. When they put up cameras everywhere I felt like a criminal without doing any crime. Now I feel like a walking disease with no sickness. I quarantined in the beginning of 2020. I still hear it’s not safe to go out. That’s way past 14 days and I haven’t been sick yet this whole year of 2020. It not normal to go a whole year without getting some cold. When I get sick it’s going to look severe because my immunity system is bad in the first place. If there is a cold around I am the first person to get it. I haven’t been in a store or business since they said we have to wear a mask. Now a vaccine? I will die first. Man is fallible. God is infallible. I trust God!
May I please disagree. One of the signs of the 2nd beast in Rev. 14 is that no man may buy or sell unless they have the mark of the beast. Buying and selling is limited to what the government wants us to do.
Satan wants to control the world and this is way to get people who would not otherwise serve him.
The Coronavirus will never stop. Some of the statistics you quoted are in excess of what the Coronavirus has done.
At best it’s about power and control. Some Christians believe that we will not go through the tribulation but Matt. 24 makes a clear that we will. I hope I’m wrong on this point.
I could be wrong about this but I think it’s about world control which will lead to satan persecuting the people of the world unless you obey his rules and the world leaders are cooperating with satan right now.
The restrictions are also a violation of rights guaranteed by the U.S. constitution.
I may be wrong and I hope I am but this Coronavirus thing will last at least 3 1/2 years. And probably closer to a minimum of 7 years.
The older pandemics didn’t require people in Nursing Homes to stay cooped up like we kind of ate now.
